PPP/C writes Finance Minister as APNU+AFC seeks to divert IDB Loan to build homes for activists

The Opposition PPP/C was forced to write Finance Minister, Winston Jordan seeking clarification after it was announced that the APNU+AFC Government is seeking reformulation of the US$66M IDB Loan Agreement. The agreement was negotiated by the PPPP/C while in government as is intended facilitate the upgrade of Sheriff /Mandela Highway (expansion, traffic safety and other features included); facilitate the upgrade of Diamond to Timehri Road, continuing from the four lane highway; facilitate the upgrade of road networks in Canals Number One and Two; facilitate the upgrade of the East Berbice Highway and other works which is intended to benefit the nation as a whole.
Instead the APNU+AFC Government is looking to expend US$30M of this sum on Sophia, Patterson, Turkeyen, Cummings Lodge and Cummings Park areas and the proposed works includes providing subsidies for the construction of core homes and home improvement projects.

The Opposition is particularly concerned given the APNU+AFC government’s partisan track record. This move, we believe, is intended to benefit its activists and their families.
